“Willy” Gilligan a.k.a. Gilligan Hophople, died today at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital. Mr. Hophople was 70. Mr. Gilligan is survived by close friends Mary Ann Summers, Eunice Wentworth Howell and Roy Hinkley Jr., better known as ‘The Professor’ Willy’s best friend and long time “life companion” Jonas Grumby, also known as the Skipper passed away January 2, 1990 from cancer of the thymus (whatever that may be… it’s surely fatal!)

Mr. Hophople was employed first as “Little Buddy” then as first mate of the tiny ship S.S. Minnow (named after Newton Minnow, the FCC Chairman in 1961) Based at an undisclosed tropic port, the Minnow was primarily used for drug running, and was converted to a tourist charter some time later. Leaving for a three hour tour, the Minnow was shipwrecked after the weather started getting rough and the tiny ship was tossed. If not for the courage of the fearless crew (and the apprehension that thirteen kilos of cocaine might be washed overboard) the Minnow would have been lost.

Gilligan lived on an uncharted desert isle from early 1964 (located at 34.1N 118.7W, better known as Echo Park in Los Angeles) until September 4th, 1967 when the ridiculous show was cancelled. Mr. Hophople was never heard from again.
